Each week, I have been summarizing my adventures in making music - except last week I completely forgot! Lately, I have been busy and devoting most of my scarce music-making time to writing music with Coral Ghost and finishing up the 52-week music-making project, Weekly Beats. This blog primarily contains slightly annotated posts originally found on Mastodon.
This song is in 6/4 and I found throughout the process that I kept hearing and writing parts in 4/4 to accompany the original beat. There were three separate occasions where I was listening to loops and wondering why they didn't line up, only to realize that I that varying loop lengths. I also composed this track on a very condensed timeline. The bulk of the work happened Friday night and Saturday morning - more of a "Weekend Beat." I am pretty happy with how it turned out, so this has been another lesson on the importance of just sitting down to do the work. Otherwise, I would have just given up on Thursday thinking I hadn't made enough progress to finish a track by the Sunday deadline.
This song sandwiches a 5/4 breakdown between two build-ups in 9/4. I wrote the song starting with loops in 9/4 and then worked with each loop to adjust it to 5/4. I tried to put more work into this track earlier in the week, but I still found myself falling behind by Friday with only the two sets of loops to show for it. I threw a quick arrangement together that night and slept on it. When I revisited it the next morning, I was pleasantly surprised with how far along I was. Sometimes I just need a little break from a track I'm working on in order to move it forward.
