Each week, I first summarize my adventures in making music. Lately, I have been composing tracks for the Disquiet Junto, the Naviar Records Haiku Music Challenge and, this year for the first time, Weekly Beats. I also have other projects and collaborations I will share occasionally.

I also bring together the perspective I shared in posts on social media (currently Mastodon) about the music industry in the section: Music + Tech + Law. These thoughts are intended to come from me as a consumer of, and participant in, the entertainment business. However, I cannot completely separate the thoughts I generate from the part of my brain I use for my day job as a lawyer experienced in technology contracts and intellectual property.*

My Music

This track started out in Ableton Note and I made it over to the full version of Ableton relatively early in the week, but every session working on it after that was extremely short. I had a friend in town and also was prioritizing another project, so I knew my bandwidth was going to be low. It shows in the final product for me, but I am still happy to put something together to keep the streak alive.

Music + Tech + Law

When I think about what made me want to become a musician in the first place, I recall going to a live concert and not just hearing the kick drum through the sound system, but actually feeling that sound vibrating my chest. That’s not something I would expect to translate on an iPhone through the Taptic Engine, but this announcement makes me think about the potential for a new dimension to music composition, where parts are written to primarily be felt as opposed to just being heard.

Miscellaneous on Music

I had a friend in town this weekend and decided to take him to the Motown Museum. Even people who don’t know much about the music of that period can appreciate the history of the business that was behind so many great songs.

I loved it when Universal Audio came out with a plug-in emulating the reverb chambers in the attics of those iconic buildings. So I was excited during the tour when the guide pointed to an opening in the ceiling serving as an example of how those chambers might have looked.
