I started pursuing making electronic music because I was frustrated as a drummer only being able to play at certain times of the day and always having to work around other musicians’ schedules if I wanted to play in a band. For me, electronic music has always been computer-based and I have pursued it as a hobby. What I never anticipated, though, is my day job becoming almost 100% computer-based and I am finding it hard lately to sit down to play at my music computer after doing my job on my work computer. The same goes for writing this blog, hence this catch-up post for the last couple of weeks.
Not wanting to write a blog post is one thing, but I when I finally had a free moment to sit down and work on music recently, I experienced some serious repulsion from my computer screen and walked away from it. It was disheartening because the computer has been such a convenient and efficient music-making device. Thankfully, I was able to pivot to a different musical activity - namely playing my bass guitar.
Over the summer, I traded in some old gear in exchange for a bass guitar. I never could get my fingers to do what I wanted them to do on a six-string guitar, but playing one of four strings at a time seems like something I can accomplish. I put off practicing in favor of finishing tracks for Weekly Beats last year, so I am going to try to make more time for simple practice exercises this year. I am using StudyBass to teach myself how to play.
